Now a Hulu Original Series
The Handmaid's Tale is a novel of such power that the reader will be unable to forget its images and its forecast. Set in the near future, it describes life in what was once the United States and is now called the Republic of Gilead, a monotheocracy that has reacted to social unrest and a sharply declining birthrate by reverting to, and going beyond, the repressive intolerance of the original Puritans. The regime takes the Book of Genesis absolutely at its word, with bizarre consequences for the women and men in its population.
The story is told through the eyes of Offred, one of the unfortunate Handmaids under the new social order. In condensed but eloquent prose, by turns cool-eyed, tender, despairing, passionate, and wry, she reveals to us the dark corners behind the establishment’s calm facade, as certain tendencies now in existence are carried to their logical conclusions. The Handmaid's Tale is funny, unexpected, horrifying, and altogether convincing. It is at once scathing satire, dire warning, and a tour de force. It is Margaret Atwood at her best.
Every fourteen months it appears on a secluded beach in a small town just before dawn.
One morning during his daily run to the beach, Danny Lynch witnesses the strangest and most incredible thing he's ever seen.
A dark, man-like figure emerges from the ocean, stands for just a few moments on the beach, and then retreats back to the surf. Danny's perspective on the world changes in an instant, and as the only eyewitness to this event, his mission now is to convince anyone who will listen that what he saw was real. But with only a vague photo and a dubious story, that task is proving almost impossible, and his only hope may be in finding a mysterious woman who was at the beach earlier that morning, and who may hold the terrifying secret that could cost Danny his life.

‘By the middle of February the imposing armada that had been designated to carry the operation through had, with the exception of a very few vessels still on the way, assembled in the vicinity of the Dardanelles, and only favourable weather was now needed to begin…’
The Dardanelles is a frank, studious, yet enthralling examination of the broad strategical aspects of the campaign during the Great War. Severely restricted in munitions, supplies and forces due to more pressing needs in other ‘theatres of war’, the Allies suffered both great losses in furious battles as well as successful landings and evacuations.
This volume aims not to furnish the reader with an account of the war as a great and thrilling adventure, but to reveal the tactical elements of the campaign from which there is much to learn. As such, episodes of explosive fighting are only touched upon, while the tactical elements of the enterprise are favoured.
The famous landing of the Gallipoli peninsula, for example, is dealt with in exquisite detail, as is the strategy behind forcing the straits without military cooperation, and the volume also aims to reveal in new light the art of amphibious warfare.
The Dardanelles is a must read for all military enthusiasts.
C. E. Callwell was a well-known military historian, having already written several books and biographies by the time The Dardanelles was first published in 1919. His military experience is also extensive – a retired colonel by the outbreak of war, Callwell was recalled and immediately promoted to Temp Major-General and Director of Military Operations. This vast experience of war and military operations manifests itself in an objective and thorough text, made all the more readable through Callwell’s smooth and accessible prose style.
Family meant everything.
Good, bad, right, wrong, legal, illegal—none of that mattered when it came to family. Family was and always would be number one.
Catarina Lambardoni stayed on the legal side of the family businesses by running Lambardoni Enterprises. Professionally, she was beyond successful. In her personal life, however, she was not, having just walked in on her boyfriend cheating on her.
Jag Maratelli, the boss’s right hand, worked extremely hard to sustain his position in the family and honored it with his life. When he was summoned to the East Coast for an unexpected meeting, a chance encounter with Catarina and one look into the fire within her made him a very determined man.
The chemistry between the two scorched hot, and Jag had been with enough women to know Catarina was something special, something he couldn’t allow himself to walk away from. Life had other ideas, though, when a betrayal in the family sent him two thousand miles away from her while danger lurked closer than anyone realized.
Would their connection be strong enough for both of them to pursue more?
Or would people and events from the past and present make that choice for them?
"Is this really a demigod? I don’t exactly know what my expectations were – it’s not like I have anything to compare it to. But I certainly did not expect a demigod to be walking around in ripped jeans with a beat up face and complaining about a headache. I didn’t expect someone with such sad, tired eyes. But I also know that under normal circumstances, that same face is flawless."

QUOTES
"She thinks we’re a bunch of overconfident aristocrats descended from an ancient royal family led by a group of powerful men." Sampson
"The threat in those words doesn’t escape me. I had kind of expected that he wouldn’t pull me against him and kiss me senseless, but I hadn’t expected having to leave this soon either. Hesitantly, I take one step closer and place the cake box on the porch before I turn around and walk away. This is starting to get old." Laurel
"I never seem to be able to call my mother by anything other than her first name. It probably has something to do with my Spartan upbringing. I don’t remember her ever comforting me when she left me behind crying on Olympus. And yet I respect her, because I know very well that raising me has been no easy task." Sampson
"You won’t hurt me, Sam. You hurt people who hurt me." Laurel
"I toss aside the towel and saunter into the bedroom. Despite the hard water pressure of the shower and the stretching, my body is still tight, and my muscles feel cramped. I could use a massage, but there is no time left to work out the kinks. I squat and search for a pair of boxers in my bag. Then I unzip one of the garment bags hanging on the closet door, take out a dark, custom-made suit, and put on a white dress shirt. I button up and loop a tie around my neck. As I push a cufflink through the hole of the sleeve, Laurel gets into my head. Laurel, who had driven me to the brink of madness by taking the cufflinks off. I can still smell the tempting scent of her skin, still feel her fingertips carefully exploring my abdomen. I feel myself getting hard when I think of the sensuous way she touched me. I can almost taste her. I almost did taste her." Sampson
"This is me, Laurel. Complicated. No relationships, no expectations, no promises." Sampson

PREGNANT VIRGIN WALKS INTO A TOWN...THE WEEK BEFORE CHRISTMAS!
A literary twist on the traditional Christmas story, A SEASON OF SECRETS is the perfect winter read for fans of Barbara Kingsolver, LOVE, ACTUALLY, and THE FAMILY STONE.
There's Something About Mary—something noticeable—that baby bump she’s sporting. And something no one could ever guess—her prenatal exam shows she’s never had sex. Which really puts tiny Bellingham, Indiana on the map! And thereon hangs the real tale—a funny, warm, surprising one.
Mary’s got her own secrets—lots of them. But so does everyone else in Bellingham. Violet the waitress wants something badly! Dr. Bob has big plans. Joe the Postman has regrets. Cammy has a secret love. And Ted may not be quite as godly as he’d like people to think.
The varied ways the townsfolk welcome this waif from nowhere, enfolding her into their hearts and lives despite the air of mystery and strangeness surrounding her (not to mention the TV cameras and paparazzi), is one part heartwarming, one part laugh-out-loud funny.
WHO WILL LIKE IT: Sophisticated readers who like their Christmas goodies a little bit tart and a little sweet--like lemon bars or cranberry shortbread; who prefer LOVE, ACTUALLY to A CHRISTMAS CAROL; who'd like to leave the true meaning of Christmas a little bit mysterious--and possibly open to miracles.
WHO WILL BE OFFENDED: No one! It isn't anti-religious or anti-Christian or anti-Christmas. But it isn't religious either. Whether you're Baptist, or Pagan or Jewish or atheist, it's guaranteed not to offend your sensibilities! Because it's not about religion any more than BAD SANTA is. Although it may poke gentle fun at some of our more materialistic traditions, it's a good-hearted tale that's all about hope. It might even make you feel festive!

A sexy, suspenseful, heart-stopping romance novel from Lauren Blakely, #1 New York Times Bestselling author of the Seductive Nights series....
At the outbreak of the Second World War D. M. Crook, of No. 609 Squadron AAF, was at Yeadon, still undergoing his training; by the winter of 1939-40, he had his wings.
Successfully applying to return to his Squadron, then on defence duties in northern England, Crook began to familiarise himself with their new fighter: the Spitfire.
Soon they were posted to RAF Northolt, and it was at this time that Crook, much to his chagrin, was left grounded, undergoing knee surgery as they flew over Dunkirk.
Following the Allied evacuation from France, Crook returned to the air and found himself facing the relentless sorties as the skies above Britain transformed into a battlefield.
In one particularly frank passage, Crook recounts how he mistakenly shot down a Blenheim, going on to illustrate how easy it was for pilots to misidentify aircraft.
‘Spitfire Pilot’ is a remarkable account of one officer’s life in 609 Squadron, the excitement, the anxieties and the camaraderie, during one of the most famous battles of the Second World War.
‘Crook and his colleagues committed acts of unimaginable bravery against the German aircraft. Many did not make it and the author describes the ansence they leave in the squadron with great poignancy. His descriptions of aerial conflict will rarely be bettered.’ Magazine
'A brilliant first-hand account of the life of a fighter pilot before and during the Battle of Britain.' - Spectator
'A unique personal insight into one of the crucial periods of the war ... I cannot recommend this highly enough.' - World War II Magazine
Flt. Lt. David Moore Crook, D.F.C. (1914-1944) was commissioned into the Auxiliary Air Force in September 1938, as an Acting Pilot Officer. In May 1940 he was promoted Pilot Officer, in December of the same year Flight Officer, before reaching the rank of Flight Lieutenant a year later. One of ‘The Few’ who fought in the Battle of Britain, where he won the D.F.C., in December 1944 he failed to return to base: his Spitfire was reported to have dived into the sea. He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
