Definition of "Mystery Genre": Fiction in which a detective resolves a crime or series of crimes. This genre can also be referred to as detective or crime novels. The plot of a mystery ebook focuses on the crime that needs to be solved, and the detective that will solve it. Typical elements include the detective being in danger, a host of suspects with their own motives, and clues, motives and alibis. The genre can vary greatly dependent on the time in which the mystery is set, as that will drive what tools the detective has at his/her disposal.
Some examples of the best mysteries of all-time include Dashiell Hammett (The Maltese Falcon), Agatha Christie (Murder on the Orient Express), Caleb Carr (The Alienist), Lyndsay Faye (Dust and Shadow), James Cain (The Postman Always Rings Twice). Of course, many of these are the best mystery ebooks of all time, as well as classics. We try to bring you free and discounted mystery ebooks on their way to being the tops in their genre.
THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME…JUST MIGHT BE GAMING ITSELF.
Gory video game violence comes home to roost when two store managers are brutally murdered in the back room of their gaming shop just before peek holiday season. The corporation that owns the store is doing everything it can to keep the matter quiet—but they won’t succeed if detective Jasmine Steele cracks the case. Because said corporation has plenty of skeletons in its closet; and one of them is far too familiar to our heroine…
Kimberly Amato serves up a heart-pounding, chilling addition to the Jasmine Steele hard-boiled mystery series—a fast-paced police procedural that’s as gripping as it is eerily personal. And it comes with a captivating (although, as Jazz might say, a slightly “nerdy”) bonus: a heaping dose of the fascinating ins and outs of video game subculture. Which is far more murderous than the average reader would suspect.
A routine call lands hardass detective Jasmine Steele and her longtime partner Will Everts at the scene of a grisly crime—two employees of a mega-corporation called Gamer Syndicate are discovered in a pile of blood, tortured, with their throats slit, and cocaine on or near them. Just as Jasmine begins to suspect the meticulous job was done by a calculating professional, she gets a jolting confirmation—literally: the joint blows up while it’s full of cops. All signs point to the shop being involved in activity much more treacherous than video games.
Understandably, Gamer Syndicate isn’t pleased with the notion that a murder was committed on their property. Not to mention that you can’t have a double homicide with drug implications when you have a billion-dollar game release in a month or so. But what Jasmine can’t abide is their apparent refusal to cooperate with the authorities—at all. The sole witness is a 19-year-old kid named Tucker Winslow, a clerk at the shop. And his employer’s keeping him silent.
Jasmine thought she was done playing games with criminals. Suddenly the case is full of them. And she has a hunch her old nemesis, the corrupt—and downright evil—Garrison clan, is at the control panel.
Alongside her big brother-esque ex-Marine partner Will and smart, savvy (not to mention sexy) girlfriend, psychologist Frankie—with some loving comic relief from her live-in nephew Chase, who’s growing up way too fast for her comfort… Jasmine must navigate the complex ins and outs of greedy corporate America at its most corrupt to solve a gruesome murder mystery—and finally put a ruthless enemy to bed.
A chilling hard-boiled treat for fans of gritty murder mysteries like those by Karin Slaughter, Mo Hayder, and Alex Marwood, not to mention those with a weakness for female cops, from the BBC’s Jane Tennison up to Rizzoli and isles. And as an added bonus, author Kimberly Amato’s no-holds-barred commentary about the ills of social media—and corporate America—is as apt as it’s wry and witty.

Discover that horror has more than one meaning, and how it often is just a footfall behind you in “Laws of Nature.” Coming from the mind of Ashley Franz Holzmann, this anthology is sure to provide you with equal parts terror, anxiety, nostalgia, and depravity as you explore a universe that is both horrific and, at points, familiar. Holzmann’s stories pull on your heartstrings and draw you into a world that will force you to acknowledge your fears, allow you to cuddle with them, and ultimately leave you feeling more human afterwards.
While trying to put his life back together in Savannah, GA, former cop Rolson McKane discovers that more than his past is coming back to haunt him. Turns out, his ex-wife might have angered some very dangerous and unusually ruthless people, and it’s now up to Rolson to clear her debts.
To make matters worse, the man sent to collect is hardly a man at all, and this devious figure isn’t interested in money. He wants to torment Rolson before killing him, and the only way to negotiate with a man like that, Rolson figures, is to fight fire with fire.
What results is a deadly game of cat-and-mouse that winds its way through the criminal underground of the Golden Isles, and it becomes clear fairly early on that only one of them will be left standing when the smoke clears.
A fast-paced and gut-wrenching mystery that will keep you turning pages until the very final word. Fans of James Lee Burke, Michael Connelly, and Stephen King will be 100% addicted to the Rolson McKane series.
If James Lee Burke moved Dave Robicheaux's base of operations to South Georgia and muddied the mysterious waters with some supernatural force, you'd have Braddy's debut novel. I'm looking forward to what Rolson McKane--and Braddy--do next. --Amazon, 5 Stars
This is not a book to pick up for a light read. It is pretty dark and deals with some of the worst of human instincts. That being said, it is REALLY good. The author has this genre nailed. The only flaw I found was a jump right at the end of the book that I really would have liked some more explanation for, but other than that, a VERY good read. --Amazon, 5 Stars
An excellent debut novel. Many memorable characters weave in and out of this supernatural thriller, not the least of which is the flawed protagonist, Rolson. --Amazon, 5 Stars
Love the Boogie House, already started The Devil Came Calling. Had the opportunity to hear Blake Braddy speak. Think we will be hearing a lot about this talented young man --Amazon, 5 Stars
Boogie House by T. Blake Braddy is an great example of great writing. One of my pet peeves is writers that cannot un-awkwardly weave description and explanation in and out of their narrative or prose. Braddy is very, very good at doing this. I am impressed. His book is easy and quick to read, and it's very interesting. Think the South + ghosts + black speakeasies in the Prohibition era + a liberal dash of thrill horror and you get this book. --Amazon, 4 Stars
A classic suspenseful, mystery thriller in the line of John Grisham and Dan Brown, with a super-natural twist and a unique perspective on the South, Boogie House is a great first novel by a thoughtful and articulate young writer. Braddy is committed to creating characters of depth via description and action, which helps propel the plot of the novel forward, capturing the reader's attention throughout and a real care for its characters. I'm looking forward to the second in the Rolson McKane series, The Devil Came Calling - can't wait to dive in! --Amazon, 5 Stars
The Corridor Man series is written by Mike Faricy under the pseudonym Nick James. The series should be read in order.

MURDER MOST VIRAL!
It’s a chilly November in 1994, and thirty-one-year-old Geoff Kavanagh surreptitiously splits his time between science fiction novels and cyberspace in his parents’ dilapidated, overgrown, uptown New Orleans mansion. Until his mother finds him dead from a suspicious fall off a ladder. Maybe he should never have posted about seeing his father murdered … because way too many people on the TOWN, a pre-Facebook virtual community, knew things about his family he didn’t even suspect. Decades-old skeletons start falling out of closets after Geoff’s untimely death, thanks to New Orleans Detective Skip Langdon. Langdon finds Geoff’s gorgeous mom strangely uninterested in her son’s fatal fall, but Mom’s apparently the only one. It seems the post has gone viral. Suddenly all the TOWNSpeople have theories—and ambition as cyberdetectives. What’s a murderer to do but kill his way out?
Calling the windup “a virtuoso spin on Rashomon,” Kirkus noted that, along the way, “Smith worms her way deeply and painfully into her cast's layers and layers of past relations, getting deeper than ever into Skip as well.”
Written in the mid-90s, Death Before Facebook is a suspenseful online murder mystery blast from the past: THE NET meets Prime Suspect.
"If you haven't discovered Smith yet, now is the time to do so . . . Move over, Sara Paretsky." —KPFA-FM (Berkeley, CA)
“A poisonous bouquet from a still-rising star.” -Kirkus
Excerpt:
“When Geoff was four years old, he and his mother came home one night to find his father dead on the bedroom floor. Shot with his own revolver—he was a cop.”
“A cop!”
“In your very own department. Geoff thought he could remember coming home—climbing the stairs with his mother, going into the bedroom, and finding the body. But once he’d asked her, and she said it wasn’t like that at all. She said Geoff ran right up the stairs and went to the bathroom; meanwhile Marguerite—that’s his mother—went into the bedroom and turned on the light. It was all she could do to keep from screaming, but she didn’t want little Geoffrey to know what was going on, so she turned out the light, closed the door, and went downstairs to call the cops.”
“Pretty damn cool.”
“Well, who knows what really happened? That’s just what she told Geoff. Anyway, it got him to thinking his own memory was bogus—or might be. And after he had that dream, he kept getting these weird flashbacks, if you want to call them that, like incest survivors are supposed to have—little half-memories. Like being in bed and hearing an argument. Running down the hall. His mother’s face. His dad on the floor… actually, he had that one all the time, from before his mother told him he’d never seen that. Do you see what I’m getting at?”
“He posted this stuff?’
“Yes.”
“Under his own name?”
“You can’t hide your identity on the TOWN—you have a user ID, but anyone can check you out in about two seconds. Geoff was Vidkid.”
“So if it was true, if he really had witnessed the murder, or had even been in the house when one was committed, he was putting it out there for the world to know. Is that what you’re saying?”
“That was our reasoning, yes. When we found out about the ‘accident’.”
Skip could see why this was the talk of the TOWN.
