Louise Marshall has just finished unpacking. Her husband has been promoted to Colonel and they've moved into a beautiful Victorian detached house. While exploring, Louise finds an odd red book. She begins to read the journal of a previous inhabitant, and finds in the long gone author, a friend. As her husband abandons her for new pursuits, she falls deeper into the world of the journal. When a prostitute is found murdered not far from the garrison Military Police Detective Tom Crane is called in to help. But the only clue is the murder weapon, a shard of mirrored glass.
