Ryder Cane has always been one step ahead of me.

I was a JV swimmer, he swam varsity.
I was on the homecoming court, he was the friggin’ king.
I got straight As, he was the valedictorian.

And now? I’m Mountainview Hospital’s newest nurse but Ryder built the whole damn hospital!

When he asks me to be his date to the grand opening gala, I know it’s just a favor to an old friend. Ryder’s so far out of my league we’re not even playing the same sport.
